Multiple BOM Types
Multiple types of BOMs to power your manufacturing operations
Component BOM's
The standard Bill of Material
The Component BOM is the most common type of bill used in an ERP system. This is type of bill of material is made up of any mix of raw materials, parts, ingredients, or sub-assemblies needed to produce a single unit of the parent part. It may contain children with negative quantities and is called an “Add/Delete”, “same as except” or “comparative” bills when this occurs.
Phantom BOM's
An intermediate assembly that is not stocked
This is a type of bill of material that represents a transient item that is physically built, but rarely stocked, before being used in the next level of manufacturing. A phantom that is in stock is consumed first before material requirements are driven down to its components.
Alternate BOM's
Interchangeable components
This is a type of bill of material that contains a list of items which can be used interchangeably with the parent part. When a work order is released each item is checked for availability in inventory. Should an item on the list be unavailable, then a check will be made to see if there are any alternates and if they are available. If so, then that alternate item will be substituted. The preference of the alternates can be chosen.
This is a type of bill of material where each child record represents an option instead of a component and requires that one of the listed options must be chosen when BOM requirements are calculated. The Modular type of bill permits “inheritance” and allows a single BOM structure to maintain unlimited permutations. It is the foundation for sales order configuration.
Variable BOM's
A variable quantity for a component
This is a type of bill designed to allow the parent part to have a variable quantity based on its unit of measure. This is particularly useful for wire or tubing manufacturers as it is not necessary to have a part number for each length (variation) of the item
Kit BOM's
Prepackaged items for repair or build
This is a type of bill that consists of a prepackaged group of parts typically used to repair or build an item. Kits may also be shipped from sales orders with no finished goods in stock, so long as the components are in stock, or work order to create stock of the finished good part number. Modular, Variable, and Phantom bill types can be used within a Kit type bill to allow it to be configured.
